As you continue your hunt for an appropriate living space, a traditional studio apartment may be on your radar.
What is a traditional studio?
It is an open space in which the living room, kitchen, and bedroom are all in one room. Traditional studios may be a good fit if privacy and/or space is not a concern for the buyer.
What is a Junior One Bedroom?
Another style of apartment you may have encountered in your search is a junior 1 or Jr1.
This is a living space similar to a studio apartment but containing an alcove area that may be converted into a bedroom. The junior 1 is often L-shaped, creating an area that can be partitioned by a wall, screen, or curtain.
If a wall has been built in this type of unit, a sliding door is most convenient. This type of living space may also be referred to as a conversion apartment.
Real estate agents may advertise the junior 1 as a one-bedroom if the enclosed space has its own window. Ideally, it should also include enough space for a bed, a nightstand, and a small armoire.
Some larger junior 1s may even fit a queen size bed in addition to the nightstand and armoire. It's important to note that these apartments may not be considered a one-bedroom if they are lacking a window.

Consider this example floor plan of a large Junior 1 at The Executive, 72-35 112 Street, Forest Hills, Queens, NY. It appears to have the alcove area enclosed, possibly with a door.
When considering a Jr1, be prepared with questions about the alcove size, closet space, and whether or not a window is present.
Is the Junior One a right fit for you?
Advantages?
There are definite advantages to purchasing a junior 1 over a traditional studio or a one-bedroom apartment.
- With its private alcove, the junior 1 provides a separate space that may be used as a sleeping area, office, or game room. This option provides an alternative to eating, sleeping, and entertaining all in the same room.
- The additional privacy is also a definite plus.
- Economically, Junior 1 apartments have more value on the market than regular studio apartments while also being more affordable than a typical one-bedroom. You'll find that the monthly maintenance fees are generally lower than one-bedroom apartments.
- A junior 1 also provides more options for reconfiguring the layout of your living space over a studio.
Disadvantages?
- The junior 1 will most often be smaller than a regular one-bedroom apartment. If the alcove is enclosed, it may not have the closet one would expect in a separate sleeping area.
- Space for a built-in closet will be limited leaving storage an issue.
